Description

Black Talon starts life as one bar of high carbon steel and never stops being one bar. The blade, the tang and the finger ring were all drawn out of that single piece on the anvil, so there is no join anywhere in the knife for a screw to back out of or a pin to work loose. What you hold is a continuous piece of forged steel with cord wrapped around the middle of it.

You can read the forging on the flat. Hammer facets sit under a skin of dark scale, left exactly as it came off the fire, while the bevel and the ring were taken down bright on the belt. The contrast is not a finish anybody applied — it is simply the difference between the part of the bar that was ground and the part that was not.

Why the hook cuts the way it does

A karambit reverses the geometry of an ordinary knife. The edge lives on the inside of the curve, so instead of pushing a bevel into material you hook the material and draw it back toward your fist. Rope, baling twine, seatbelt webbing, shrinkwrap, hide, flattened cartons: the curve traps them and the edge does the rest with almost no downward force from you. Anyone who has fought a hay bale with a straight blade understands the appeal within about ten seconds.

The tip is fine enough to start a cut in packaging and stout enough to survive being levered sideways out of a knot. If you are new to the shape, our breakdown of knife blade shapes puts the hawkbill next to its cousins and shows what each profile is really good at.

Cord in the hand

The wrap is tight black paracord laid over the bare tang, each turn pulled down hard against the last. It gives a grip that is faintly springy, never slick, and that stays workable when your palms are wet or you are wearing thin gloves. Cord also has an advantage no scale material can match: it is consumable. Wash it with dish soap and warm water when it gets grubby, and if a strand ever abrades through, cut it off and lay on a fresh wrap. In a genuine emergency the handle unwinds into several feet of usable line.

The ring at the back is the other half of the handle. Your index finger sits inside it, which means the knife stays with you whether or not your grip is closed. You can spin from a forward hold to a reverse hold without setting the blade down, and you can open a gate or steady a load with an open hand while the knife hangs off your finger.

Leather that was cut to fit this blade

The sheath is oxblood veg-tan, wet formed around the blade so the crescent nests instead of rattling, saddle stitched by hand in contrasting thread and closed with a brass stud over a belt loop wide enough for a work belt. It rides flat against the hip rather than swinging.

Living with plain carbon steel

High carbon takes a sharper edge than stainless and comes back on a plain stone in a couple of minutes, but it pays for that with rust if you neglect it. Dry the bright bevel whenever it gets wet, and give it a smear of food-safe oil now and then; leave the dark scale alone, because that oxide layer is already doing a protective job. Never park the knife inside damp leather for weeks. If a bloom of orange does appear, our notes on taking rust off a knife will get the surface back without wrecking the patina.

Made in Memphis

Every one of these is forged, ground, heat treated and finished in our Tennessee shop, then edge tested before it is boxed. Because the scale pattern is whatever the hammer and the fire produced that day, no two of these claws carry identical markings. If you want a companion piece with a screw-together handle instead of cord, the Verdant Reaper in olive Micarta is the same profile in D2. Mention at checkout that it is a present and it will leave here wrapped. Every knife carries a lifetime guarantee against faults in materials or workmanship, and the shop has now taken more than 2,000 verified five-star reviews.
