Description
Anvil Oak wears its making on its face. The whole cheek of the head is covered in overlapping hammer stamps — the dimpled texture you get when a smith works the steel down under a cross-peen rather than grinding it to shape. It catches light differently from every angle and it is the one part of a hand-forged axe you cannot fake. Hatchet profile, flat hammer poll, bevel ground and polished bright, straight American oak haft.

Built for: firewood, kindling, tent pegs and camp chores. A hatchet profile puts more steel behind the edge than a thin trade-hawk bit, so it splits better and takes knots without complaint. The hammer poll drives stakes. Choke up under the head for controlled work, drop to the butt to swing.
On the hammer stamps: every head is worked by hand, so the pattern and depth of the texture is different on every one. Yours will not match the photograph exactly — that is the nature of forged work.
Care: high carbon steel rusts if you leave it wet. Wipe the head dry after use and keep a light film of mineral oil on it. The textured surface actually holds oil better than a polished one. A grey patina will build with time — leave it, it protects the steel. Oil the oak once or twice a year. Check the head for tightness before every session; wood moves with the seasons, and a loose head on any axe is dangerous.
FAQs
Hatchet or tomahawk — which is this? Both terms get used loosely. This has a hatchet’s heavier, wedge-shaped bit rather than a trade-hawk’s thin flared one, on a tomahawk-length haft. In practice: it splits better than a hawk and chops about the same.
Does it arrive sharp? Yes — sharpened and ready to work. High carbon steel takes an edge back easily on a field stone.
Can it be thrown? Yes. The forge finish will not look any worse for the marks.
Is a sheath included? Yes — a fitted leather edge sheath comes with every tomahawk we build.
