Description
Plume Canyon carries the hardest pattern a smith can forge. Feather Damascus is made by splitting a twisted billet down its length and re-forging it open, so the layers spread away from a central quill in two mirrored halves — a single feather standing in the steel, running the whole flat of the blade. Most billets fail. The ones that do not become knives like this.
The handle is ram horn, honey amber shot through with dark tiger striping and left with its natural ridges, set behind a polished stainless bolster with brass pins and a lanyard hole at the butt. Underneath, the grind is a working cowboy bull cutter: a deep, square-nosed sheepsfoot with a full 3.5 inch straight edge and a notched choil.

Built for: ranch and stock work, hunting camp, cutting twine, hide and feed sacks, and everyday belt carry — but this is also our top-shelf bull cutter, and most of them end up as retirement, anniversary or milestone gifts, or in a collection.
Care: Damascus is a high-carbon steel and will spot or patina if it is put away wet. Wipe the blade dry after every use and keep a light film of mineral or camellia oil on it — this also keeps the feather etch crisp and dark. Ram horn is a natural material: keep it out of prolonged direct sun and standing water, wipe it rather than soaking it, and rub in a little mineral oil once or twice a year to stop it drying. Do not store the knife inside the leather sheath long term.
FAQs
What is feather Damascus and why does it cost more?
The smith forge-welds a billet, twists it, then splits it lengthways and forges the two halves open around a central core. When it is etched, the layers fan out from that core in mirrored barbs — a feather. It takes far more forging steps than twist or raindrop Damascus and the billet can delaminate at any of them, so the pattern carries a premium wherever it is made.
Where does the ram horn come from?
It is a by-product of the meat industry, from domestic sheep, and involves no protected or endangered species. It has been used for knife and tool handles for centuries because it is hard, warm in the hand and full of natural colour.
Will my knife look exactly like the photograph?
No. Ram horn varies from pale honey through deep amber to almost black, with its own striping and ridges, and every feather billet etches into a different plume. Your Plume Canyon will share the shape, dimensions and build shown, but it will be a one-off.
Can I actually use a Damascus knife, or is it for display?
Use it. The pattern comes from forge-welding different steels together; the finished blade is hardened, ground and sharpened like any other working knife. It simply asks to be kept dry and lightly oiled.
Is the leather sheath included?
Yes. The handmade leather belt sheath with stud closure shown ships with the knife at no extra cost.
