Description

Four and a half inches of mirror-finished 440C, a deeply scroll-engraved bolster, and a dark wood handle on a knife that is priced as a presentation piece rather than a working skinner.

Overall length 8.5 inches
Blade length 4.5 inches
Handle length 4 inches
Steel 440C stainless steel
Handle Wooden Engraved handle with Luxury handmade finish
Included Hand-stitched leather sheath

Its job: skinning and light field dressing, or a display shelf. The upswept belly and short blade are the classic skinner arrangement, made for drawing a long cut through hide without punching through into the gut.

Care: 440C is stainless in the way that matters, so blood and rain will not pit it and running water does it no harm. What a mirror polish does not survive is abrasion, and every use puts fine scratches into it. That is unavoidable and worth knowing before you spend this much. The engraved bolster collects grime down in the cuts; an old toothbrush and warm soapy water clears it far better than any cloth. Store it outside its sheath, since leather traps damp against steel.

What you are paying for

The steel here is 440C, which is a good, honest stainless and not an exotic. The price is in the hand engraving on the bolster, the finish work and the fitting, not in the alloy. That is a legitimate thing to buy and it is also a thing worth being clear-eyed about. A forged Damascus hunter at roughly half the money will cut just as well and take a better edge. You are choosing decoration, and there is nothing wrong with that as long as you know it.

How a short skinner handles

Four and a half inches is deliberately short. A skinner works close to the hand with the belly doing the cutting and the point kept away from anything you do not want opened. Too much blade makes that job harder, not easier. Against that, this is a poor camp knife: it will not baton, it will not chop, and the shape makes awkward work of food prep. What a skinner needs explains why the shape looks the way it does.

The handle and the engraving

The engraving sits on the steel bolster rather than the wood, cut in a scrolling pattern that catches light from any angle. Hand-cut work varies slightly piece to piece. The wood is finished smooth and looks superb dry; understand that smooth polished wood is less grippy with wet hands than textured stag or micarta would be, which is a real consideration on a knife nominally meant for dressing game.

Before you order

Will using it hurt the value? The mirror finish will scratch and the polish will dull. If you intend to keep it pristine, buy it as a display piece and use something cheaper in the field.

How does 440C compare to the tool steels? It resists corrosion better and holds an edge less long. The full picture on 440C is worth reading at this price.

Is the engraving pattern identical on every one? No. It is cut by hand, so yours will differ in small ways from the photograph.
