Its purpose: camp and utility work where you want a strong tip and a long straight edge. The tanto grind puts most of the steel behind the point, which is the part of a blade that usually fails first.

Care: Wash it, dry it, put it away. The blade is stainless. There is no oil schedule, and a wet trip is not something you need to plan around. Keep the walnut out of prolonged soaking and away from direct heat and it will stay as it arrived.

FAQs

What makes a tanto different? The edge runs straight to an angled secondary edge instead of curving to a point. That leaves far more steel behind the tip, so it takes point loads a fine drop point would not.

Is the handle full tang? No. It is a hidden tang, Japanese style, with the tang running inside a one-piece walnut handle. That is what gives it the smooth uninterrupted grip with no visible pins.

What are the colored bands? Fiber spacers, red and black, set between the blade and the walnut. They seal the joint and mark the transition.

The angled tip

The tanto point is two straight edges meeting at an angle rather than one curve running to a point. The advantage is thickness: there is real steel right up to the tip, so it survives prying and piercing that would snap a thinner point. The cost is that you lose the belly, so it is a worse slicer than a drop point. That trade is the whole design. Our guide to knife types puts it alongside the alternatives.

Stainless, and what it buys you

For anything that lives near water, salt or food, stainless is the sensible specification and everything else is a preference. You wash it and put it away. There is no monthly routine, no oiled rag, and no anxiety about a wet sheath after a rained-out weekend. Our knife steel chart sets out where the different families sit on edge retention and corrosion resistance.

Walnut and the hidden tang

A hidden tang handle is turned and fitted as one piece, so there is nothing interrupting your grip and no pin heads to press into your palm. Walnut is dense enough to take the mounting and figured enough to be worth looking at, and the grain on any one handle is not repeated. It is a handle you can hold all day. The sheath is tooled brown leather with contrast stitching. For a tanto that folds instead, see the Saturn titanium tanto folder.
