On the bench for: people with smaller hands, and people who already own a full-size balisong and want something they can flip at a desk without clearing the room. The short handles change the timing of every opening you already know.
Small on purpose
Shrinking a balisong is not a matter of scaling the drawing down. The handles have to stay wide enough to grip properly, the pivots have to stay large enough to carry the load, and the blade still has to sit fully enclosed when the knife is shut. Get any one of those wrong and what you have is a keychain ornament. This one keeps the proportions honest, which is why it weighs 4.2 oz rather than the ounce and a half you might guess from a photograph.
Damascus at this scale
A small blade shows pattern differently. There is less surface for the figure to develop across, so the swirls read tighter and more concentrated than the same steel would look on a hunting blade. The layers run through the full thickness, and the ground bevel is where you confirm it: the figure keeps going right down to the cutting edge rather than ending in a hard line.
Horn and brass
Black buffalo horn against brass is the oldest combination in the Filipino pattern and still the best looking one. Horn polishes to a depth that plastic cannot copy, and the brass bolsters at each end absorb the wear that would otherwise land on the softer material. Both will change with handling: the brass goes gold-brown, the horn deepens toward black.
Care
High carbon Damascus, so dry it and run a smear of oil across both flats. On a knife this small there is very little surface to protect, which makes the whole job about two minutes a month. Do not leave horn panels next to a radiator or in a hot car; sustained dry heat is the one thing that will crack them, and it is not repairable. Brass takes polish whenever you want it bright again.
