The cut-out, and what it costs
Piercing a silhouette through the flat of a blade is real work: the outline has to be cut, filed true, then finished on both faces without leaving the surrounding steel wavy. It also removes material, which is why you will not find it on a heavy-duty blade. In practice this is a knife for cutting, not prying. Use it on tape, cord, packaging, apples and letters and it will outlast you.
Opening and lock-up
The blade runs on a thumb stud set high on the flat, with jimping filed into the spine behind it for the pad of your thumb. Together they give a controlled one-hand opening with no assist mechanism, which is worth knowing if your state regulates assisted openers. The resin scales
The scales are poured resin — solid and non-porous, with color and swirl carried through the block rather than sitting on the surface. In a pocket that pays: it does not absorb sweat, will not swell or split, and lint and denim dye leave no stain. It scratches more easily than steel, so expect fine marks at the pivot end where it rubs a seam. The bolster at the front is steel and takes the wear.
Keeping it working
Almost everything that goes wrong with a folding knife happens inside the pivot. Lint, dust and grit pack the joint until the action drags, and people force it, grinding the debris into the washers. Flush it instead: warm water through the joint, work the blade open and closed a dozen times, then dry it thoroughly with compressed air or by leaving it open somewhere warm. Follow with one drop of light oil at the pivot. Wipe the blade after cutting anything acidic, and keep it out of the pocket you carry keys in.
