Built for: a study wall, a mantel, a ceremonial presentation, or a gift that has to land the moment the box opens. It is not a training weapon and it is not a cutting tool.
Why a long blade is a different engineering problem
Length changes everything. A sword blade is a long lever, and the forces arriving at the guard when the tip is struck are large. Tempered in oil to the hardness shown above, this sits at the hard end of what a long blade can be without turning brittle. That is the right call for something meant to be looked at. It is not the call a maker would make for a blade intended for contact cutting, which would be left softer and more forgiving.
The pattern line on our spec sheet is broken
You will see a fragment in the table above where the pattern description belongs. The text was truncated during a catalog migration, and we have left it visible rather than quietly inventing a replacement. What is true: the blade is pattern-welded 1095 and 15N20, etched to bring the layering out, and the figure differs from one blade to the next. What we cannot tell you from the sheet is which named pattern this run was forged in. Ask and we will check the billet record.
Hanging and storing something this long
Long blades are far heavier at the tip end than people expect, so a knife-sized wall mount will not do. Fix into a stud rather than drywall anchors, and support the blade at two points rather than hanging it all from the guard. Horizontal beats vertical for a scabbarded blade, because one stored point-down slowly works oil out of the steel and into the scabbard tip. Our storage guide covers the humidity side of it.
Care: twenty-five inches of high-carbon Damascus is a great deal of surface to keep oiled, and it does need doing, because this steel has no meaningful corrosion resistance. Run an oiled cloth along it every few months, more often in a humid house, and always after anyone handles it, since fingerprints etch. Keep brass polish well away from the blade, because it strips the etch off pattern-welded steel. Handle first, blade last, different cloths. Do not store it in the scabbard long term.
FAQs
Is it sharp? It is finished as a functional blade rather than blunted for display. Treat it accordingly.
Can it be used for cutting practice? We do not recommend it. Tatami and bottle cutting put lateral loads on a blade that a display sword is not built to absorb, and a hard pattern-welded blade will chip rather than bend. If cutting practice is the interest, read our katana guide and buy something built for it.
What is the smallest thing you make? Something you can put in a pocket and forget about. A three-blade folding knife sits at the far opposite end of the same workshop.
