Description

A Damascus balisong with brass bolsters and pale, dark-streaked horn scales. Eight inches open and 7.23 ounces, which is a lot of knife for the length.

Fits: someone who wants weight in the hand and a pattern in the steel, and who is not planning to do fast aerial work with it. The mass is the defining fact about this knife. Everything else follows from it.

Overall length 8 inches
Blade length 3.5 inches
Handle length 4.5 inches
Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus, 352 layers
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Weight 7.23 oz
Handle Brass And Ram Horn Handle

What 7.23 ounces feels like

That is heavy for an eight inch balisong. Brass bolsters at both ends of both handles put most of the mass at the outside of the swing, which gives the knife a slow, deliberate rotation with real momentum behind it. Once it is moving it wants to keep moving. For rollovers and simple openings that feels excellent and forgiving. For anything requiring a quick reversal it works against you, and a knife this heavy hurts more when you catch it wrong. If you have small hands or you are new to flipping, this is not the one to start on.

Horn scales

The scales are horn, so the color and the dark streaking are natural and vary from knife to knife. Expect something in the cream to amber range with darker veining, not an exact match to any photograph. Horn is warm immediately in the hand, unlike metal or bone, and it takes on a deeper polish the more it is handled. It also responds to its environment: months in very dry heat can shrink it slightly at the bolster line. Keep it out of direct sun and away from radiators and it will stay put.

Pattern and blade

At 3.5 inches the blade is short relative to the handles, which is part of why the knife feels handle-heavy. The Damascus figure runs the length of the flat and is forged through the steel rather than applied to it. Because the pattern is exposed carbon steel, this is the part of the knife that needs attention.

Care and questions

Get the blade dry once you are done with it and leave a whisper of oil across the steel. Keep it in open air rather than sealed in leather, which traps moisture against the flats. The brass will patina toward brown where your fingers rest and can be polished back whenever you like. Oil the horn occasionally if it looks dry.

Is it too heavy for daily carry? For most pockets, yes. This is a knife you handle at home.

Does the pattern go all the way through? Yes. Sharpening reveals more of it rather than removing it.

How Damascus is forged explains where the figure comes from, and what real Damascus costs is useful if you are comparing prices across sellers. For something far lighter and more forgiving to learn on, see the dyed bone D2 balisong.
