BMK-741 comes from the 250 Anniversary knives, a limited run where the fittings carry engraving work we do not put on standard models. A seven-inch Damascus blade, a five-inch buffalo horn grip, and bolsters cut with gold engraved detail at both ends of the handle.

Built for: the shelf, the case, and occasional careful use. Nobody buys an engraved anniversary piece in order to gut a hog, and we would not encourage it. What this does well is sit somewhere visible and hold its worth as an object, which is a legitimate reason to buy a knife.
What engraved bolsters change
Engraving cuts into metal, so the design is physical rather than printed and will never rub away. What it does introduce is texture, and texture collects things: dust, skin oil, sheath fibers, whatever happens to be in the air. A soft jewelry brush clears the cuts without polishing down the high spots. Never take metal polish to an engraved surface, because compound packs into the recesses, dries pale, and ends up looking far worse than the tarnish you set out to remove.
Horn scales on a display knife
Buffalo horn is traditional on pieces like this because it takes a deep polish and every set is visually distinct. On something displayed rather than carried, the risks differ from a working knife. Horn dislikes direct sunlight, and a south-facing window will lift and lighten the color across a couple of summers. It also dislikes sitting beside a radiator. A shaded shelf in a normally heated room is ideal, and the material will look the same twenty years from now.
Care
Handle it, then wipe it. That is most of the job. Skin is mildly acidic, and a bare Damascus blade shows fingerprints as faint gray marks within days if they are left in place. Use a microfiber cloth, and once a season add a trace of light machine oil to the flats. The leather sheath is for transport only, since vegetable-tanned hide is chemically hostile to steel over months. If you intend to keep several pieces together, read our note on storing knives properly, because a display case with a little air movement beats a drawer every time.

Is this an investment? Treat it as an object you enjoy owning. Limited runs sometimes hold value and often do not, and anybody promising otherwise is guessing. Our piece on whether Damascus knives are worth it is deliberately unexcited.
Can it be personalized further? Laser engraving can be added to the blade flat before it ships.
