This one is for: the owner who wants an edge that lasts through a long session of cutting and does not mind sharpening slowly when it finally dulls. D2 sits in an awkward, useful place. It carries enough chromium to resist light corrosion better than a plain carbon blade, but not enough to be called stainless, and its carbide structure makes it stubborn on a stone and excellent once you get there.
Philippine deer horn
Each insert is sawn from antler, which means the color, the density of the mottling and the grain direction vary from knife to knife. What arrives will not look identical to the photograph, and that is the nature of the material rather than a compromise. Antler is tough, slightly porous, and grippier than horn or bone when your hands are damp. The brass channels around it are polished bright at the factory and will mellow to a soft gold with handling.
Balance in the hand
A 4.4 inch blade against a 4.7 inch handle, 9.1 inches overall. Brass channels put the mass low. The knife rolls with a slow, heavy cadence rather than a whippy one, which suits deliberate manipulation and makes the latch land with a solid click instead of a rattle.
Sharpening D2 without frustration
Diamond plates or a hard ceramic rod will save you an evening. Ordinary soft aluminum oxide stones glaze quickly against D2’s carbides and leave you polishing rather than cutting. Take it in stages, keep the angle constant, and finish by stropping on bare leather. Done properly the edge will hold through work that would flatten a simpler steel three times over.
Care. D2 resists surface rust but it is not immune, so wipe the blade after use and store it dry. Antler is the part that needs watching. Do not soak it, do not leave it in a hot car, and do not put oil on it hoping to feed it, because antler is not wood and the oil simply sits on the surface collecting dust. If the inserts ever dry out and look chalky, a light buff with a clean cloth brings the sheen back. Brass polish belongs on the channels only; keep it well away from the horn.
