Description

Every Timber Rattlesnake begins as raw high-carbon billets, and what comes back out of the forge wears a hand-forged Damascus pattern your thumb can trace across the flat. What arrives is a working Damascus hunting knife first and a mantelpiece object second: a fixed blade with a deep, upswept belly, a crown stag grip, and the kind of heft that tells you where the tip is without looking.

Overall length 11 inches
Blade length 6 inches
Steel 1095 + 15N20 Damascus, 352 layers
Handle Crown stag with amber and black spacers
Hardness 58–60 HRC, oil tempered
Weight 14 oz

The steel, and why it behaves this way

The bar is pattern-welded from two high-carbon steels that answer the acid differently. The 1095 supplies the carbon that lets an edge get thin and stay thin; the 15N20 carries a little nickel, shrugs off the etch, and leaves those bright silver rivers running the length of the flat. Fold, weld, draw out, repeat, and our note on what a high layer count actually buys a blade explains where the number lands. The figure lives inside the steel rather than sitting on top of it, which is why a fingertip finds faint topography where the etch bit the softer bands deeper.

Crown stag, and what it feels like

The grip is a single length of crown stag left with its natural bark instead of being sanded flat, seated behind amber and black spacers at the guard. Antler is a wild material, so palms report it differently from one knife to the next, but the texture does one job extremely well: it holds. Cold hands, wet hands, hands slick with fat after an hour of work on a deer — the ridged surface still gives you something to close around. It also warms to your hand on a frosted November morning in a way no synthetic scale manages. Hunters drawn to antler tend to like our Persian Yuma deer antler knife for the same reason.

Grind and edge

The profile is a sweeping trailing point: a long, rising belly that lets you pull a continuous stroke under hide rather than sawing at it, and a fine tip for opening up and detail work around joints. Bevels are ground by hand and the edge leaves us shaving sharp. Field dressing and skinning are what it was drawn for, though it takes camp chores in stride: cordage, kindling, breaking down a load of game at the tailgate. Anyone weighing this class of blade against the rest of the range will find our Damascus hunting knife guide a useful sanity check.

Sheath, shop, and gift options

It ships in a hand-stitched leather sheath, cut and saddle-stitched by hand so the welt keeps the edge off the thread. Every one of these is forged, ground, heat treated and assembled in our Memphis, Tennessee shop, under a lifetime warranty and the weight of over two thousand verified reviews. If you want initials or a date on the flat before it leaves us, engraving is a twenty-nine dollar paid extra at checkout.

Living with it

High-carbon Damascus is not stainless and does not pretend to be. Dry it properly when the work is finished, keep a thin film of oil on the flats between outings, and let it live outside the leather rather than inside it, because tanned hide holds moisture against steel. Do that much and the etch stays crisp for decades. Touch the edge up on a fine stone when it stops biting paper.
