Good for: people who want a small, low-maintenance fixed blade. Field dressing small game, camp food, cutting cord, opening packaging. Nothing about it asks for a routine.

Small on purpose

A three inch blade on a four inch handle is a deliberately hand-sized knife. You get full control at the tip because the whole edge is within a few inches of your grip, and the four inch handle is long enough that a full-size hand is not cramped on it. Seven inches overall means it disappears on a belt. If your hands run small or you find most hunting knives oversized, our choosing a knife for smaller hands covers what to look for.

Stainless, and what that changes

The blade is stainless steel with a mirror finish, which changes the ownership experience more than most people expect. There is no oiling schedule, no patina to manage and no rush to dry it before you get home. Wash it, dry it, put it away. What you trade for that is a little edge retention against the best carbon steels — but at 58 to 60 HRC this holds an edge perfectly well for the work it is meant for, and it is easy to bring back on a stone. It also means you can hand this knife to somebody who will not look after it, which is not something anybody says about a carbon blade.

Bone and the lanyard eye

The handle is natural bone finished to a mirror polish, pinned through the tang with steel and fitted with a metal lanyard eyelet at the butt. Bone polishes brighter than horn and is harder, so it resists scuffing well. The eyelet is worth threading — a wrist loop on a small knife stops it disappearing into brush. Elsewhere in the Ultra Line, the UL-23 Koala is a close relative at 3.5 inches and the UL-15 Gavial steps up to 4.6.

Care: wash the blade with warm water and dish soap, dry it with a towel, and that is the whole routine — stainless does not need an oil coat and does not need to be watched. Bone is the part that wants attention: do not soak it, do not leave the knife in a hot car or on a windowsill, and buff it now and then with a trace of mineral oil to keep the polish deep. Store it outside the leather sheath so nothing sits in a damp pocket of leather.

FAQs

Does it need oiling? No. The blade is stainless. Wash it and dry it and you are done.

Is the handle real bone? Yes, natural bone finished to a mirror polish, so grain and color vary.

What is included? The knife and a hand-stitched leather sheath.
