Who it suits: the flipper who already owns something plain and reliable, and now wants a piece that looks like an object rather than a tool when it sits open on a shelf.

Two metals, and why that matters in the hand

Brass and copper have different densities, and using both in one handle is a way of moving weight around without changing the handle’s size. The engraved brass sits at the middle of each channel where your fingers wrap; the copper runs toward the bite handle. The practical result is that the handles want to fall closed rather than hang, which is what you want when you are learning a rollover. It also means the two halves are not interchangeable by feel, so you stop needing to look at which one you are holding.

Reading the pattern on this blade

The Steel row gives 352 layers, and the blade shows it as tight, close-set contour rings that crowd toward the tip where the stock was drawn thinnest. Layer count is not a quality score on its own; what it tells you is how finely the two steels alternate, which is what produces this density of line rather than a few broad bands. Every blade off the same billet reads differently. We have written up what a 352-layer count actually means if you want the arithmetic behind it.

Living with a patterned blade

The pattern you can see is an etch, and etches are shallow. Dry the blade after handling, because 1095 is a plain carbon steel and fingerprints left on it overnight will show as grey ghosts by morning. A drop of light oil spread thin with a cloth is the whole routine. Do not scrub it with an abrasive pad or a metal polish, which will take the dark layers back to bright and flatten the contrast permanently. If it does haze, it wipes back with oil rather than effort. Copper will develop its own darker tone over a year of handling; leave it or bring it back with a jeweler’s cloth, as you prefer.

Common questions

Is this a flipping knife or a display knife? Both, but the engraving is on the outside faces, so heavy tabletop practice will mark it. Many owners keep a plain trainer for drills.

Will the copper stay bright? Not without help. Copper darkens; that is what copper does.

How does it compare to the rest of the line? See the BMK-2002 hand-engraved balisong, and our breakdown of balisong construction for how these are put together.
