A knife for: a desk, a jacket pocket and occasions where a black tactical folder would be the wrong object entirely. It opens letters and packages and cuts a cigar cleanly, and at 5.9 oz it has enough heft that it does not feel like an ornament pretending to be a tool.
Care: the mokume bolsters and the set stone both dislike the same thing, which is abrasive cleaner, so keep the whole handle to a dry soft cloth. The gold plating on the opener is thin by nature and will thin further if you scrub it. On the blade, treat the 1095 and 15N20 exactly as you would on a field knife: dry, oiled, and never stored inside damp leather.
Bolsters, and why they are the hard part
The bolster is where a folder is usually let down. It has to be shaped in three dimensions, meet the scale with no gap, sit flush with the liner and take a polish without the pin heads showing as dimples. Mokume makes it harder still, because it is soft, it moves under the file, and every abrasive scratch left behind will show once the figure comes up. Steel forgives a heavy hand and can be brought back. Mokume cannot: cut too deep and you have gone through the layer you were trying to reveal, and the only remedy is to start the bolster again from stock. Most of the labor on this model sits in that one part.
Owning something you will not use hard
