Intended for: the pocket of someone who already owns a working knife and now wants a beautiful one. It cuts perfectly well, but the reason to own it is what happens when you put it on a table. Three lightening holes are drilled through the blade flat, which drops weight and gives the pattern somewhere to break. Drilling a forged blade is not trivial: the holes have to be placed where they will not weaken the spine, and they have to be cut before heat treat, because afterward the steel is hard enough to ruin a bit. Their positions are decided at the design stage, not improvised at the bench.

Care: mokume is a laminate of non-ferrous metals and it is supposed to develop a warm tone; do not attack it with abrasive polish or you will cut through the surface layer and lose the figure. The tiger iron panel is stone and should be kept away from knocks and hard drops. The blade is the same 1095 and 15N20 as our field knives, so it wants drying and a wipe of oil, not display in a humid room.

What mokume actually is

Mokume gane is layered non-ferrous metal, forge welded the way Damascus is but using copper, brass and nickel alloys rather than steels. It is cut and pressed so the layers surface as a woodgrain figure. It is much softer than the blade it sits next to, which is why the bolsters here are finished rather than sharpened, and why the material never appears on a working edge.

Where the money goes on a knife like this

Almost none of the cost is the steel. It is the setting of the stone, the fitting of stone to metal with no gap, and the hours of hand sanding that make a mokume surface read cleanly. How much a real Damascus knife costs breaks the number down honestly.

Forged, not printed

The banding on the blade is structural. It exists because two steels were welded, drawn, folded and welded again before anything was ground. How Damascus steel knives are made covers the process. If you like the layered look but want it on your hand rather than in your pocket, we forge the same billets into the Sirius Damascus ring.

FAQs

Will the stone come loose? It is set, not glued on the surface. Treat it as you would a ring stone.

Is the blade the same steel as the hunting knives? Yes, identical billet stock and heat treat.

Does it come boxed? Yes, packed for giving, with the leather listed above.
