Who it is for: somebody who wanted something that would be looked at. A milestone gift, a display piece, an anniversary. It is a genuine working folder underneath, but the person who owns one rarely uses it to open the post.
Mokume, and why it is not just a shiny bolster
Mokume gane is non-ferrous metal folded and forged the way Damascus steel is, so the bolsters carry a pattern of their own that runs through the metal rather than sitting on top of it. It is softer than steel and it patinas — copper in the mix goes warm and dark, and after a year the bolsters will not look the way they look in the photograph. Collectors count that as the point. If you want them bright, a jeweler’s cloth brings them back in a minute, and you can do that as often as you like.
What the small blade means
Two and a half inches. That is a gentleman’s folder, not a work knife. It slices, it pares, it opens things. Ask it to pry or twist and you will find the limit fast, and the limit on a knife with set stones is expensive to reach. Under five ounces, it rides in a jacket pocket without pulling the fabric.
How to keep it: three different materials, three different rules. Dry the blade and keep a whisper of oil on it, because that steel is high in carbon. The fossil tooth is porous and should never be soaked, put in a dishwasher or cleaned with alcohol, which pulls the color. The gold plating on the thumb opener is thin by nature; rub it with a polish and you will rub it off, so leave it alone and just keep it dry. The stones need nothing except not being knocked. Store it in the box rather than loose in a drawer with other knives.
