What it’s for: flat, controlled cuts where a pointed blade would be a liability. The sheepsfoot tip is dropped level with the edge, so the knife cannot dig in when you are cutting against something you would rather not puncture — a package, a strap, a line under tension.
The sheepsfoot profile
The spine runs straight and then curves down to meet the edge at the front, leaving a tip that is blunt in the direction that matters. The whole 3 inch edge is straight, which makes it the best profile on this site for board work and for anything you want to cut in one clean draw. It is the only sheepsfoot folder we make; our multi-blade pocket knife guide explains why traditional patterns so often pair a sheepsfoot with a clip point.
An all-steel handle
Pattern-welded scales mean the figure carries from the blade through the handle without a break, so the closed knife reads as a single piece of steel. It also means the handle will never dry out, crack, shrink or absorb anything. The trade is weight: 8 oz on a knife that is only 6 inches long, which is dense in the hand and the reason this one feels more substantial than its size.
Machined cutouts
The slots milled through the scales are not decoration alone. They remove metal where it does nothing structural and give your fingers a positive index point, which matters more than usual on a handle with no organic texture to grip.
Six inches, eight ounces
This is a small knife with the density of a much larger one, and that is the first thing everybody notices when they pick it up. It reads as solid rather than heavy, because the mass is spread evenly along the whole length instead of being concentrated in the blade.
Why it makes a good gift
A knife with no organic handle material is a safe present when you do not know how the recipient will treat it. Nothing here dries out, nothing needs conditioning, and there is no wood or bone to crack if it spends a year in a drawer.
Care: everything on this knife is high-carbon steel, handle included, so the whole thing wants drying after it gets wet — not just the blade. Oil the scales as well as the edge once a month. Keep it out of the leather sheath in storage, since leather holds damp against steel.
FAQs
Does the handle get slippery? The milled slots and the etched surface give more grip than polished steel would. Wet hands still call for care.
Why is it 8 oz at only 6 inches? Solid steel scales. A Micarta-handled folder in a longer size weighs less than half this.
Is it a good groomsmen gift? Yes, and engraving is available at checkout. Blade shape choices are covered in our blade shapes guide.
