The knurl, and what it does
The grip section is cut with a diamond knurl, the same pattern you find on the collar of a machinist tool, and it exists for the same reason: to give fingers purchase on a metal surface that would otherwise be slippery. On a pen it changes the writing experience more than you expect. A smooth barrel needs to be gripped; a knurled one only needs to be held, so you write with less tension and your hand tires later. It also means the pen does not roll off a sloped desk, because the square section stops it before the knurl has to.
Steel that will not stay bright
The barrel and cap are high carbon steel, not stainless, and the difference matters here more than it would on a knife because a pen lives in a hand all day. Skin is slightly acidic. Over months the flats will lose their brightness and take on a gray, faintly mottled tone that deepens where your fingers sit. This is a patina, it is stable, and it is the reason people buy a steel pen instead of an aluminum one. If you want it bright again, a metal polish and two minutes will do it, and the process starts over.
Who should not buy it
Anyone who writes for hours. A solid steel barrel is substantially heavier than a plastic or aluminum pen, and that weight is pleasant for a signature and tiring for a page of notes. It is also entirely unsuitable for a shirt pocket. And if you leave it in a bag with a wet water bottle, you will find rust on it, which is not a complaint you can make about an ordinary pen.
