Description

A pen turned and finished entirely in copper, five and a half inches capped, with a knurled grip section and a faceted barrel that catches light down every flat. We make it in the same Memphis shop as the knives, on the same benches, for the same reason a person who likes a good knife usually also likes an object with some mass to it. It arrives in a fitted black presentation box.

Overall length 5.5 inches
Steel Machined solid copper

Weight is the whole experience

A solid metal barrel at 5.5 inches puts this well above the mass of an aluminum or plastic pen, and the balance sits back toward the middle rather than out at the tip. In practice that means you stop gripping. The pen’s own weight presses the point into the paper and your fingers only steer, which is why a heavy pen is easier on the hand across a long meeting than a light one, and why it feels wrong for about two minutes before it feels right.

The copper will not stay bright

Copper is the softest material on this piece and by far the most alive. Carried daily, it moves from bright penny to a deep russet-brown within a few months, and it does so unevenly, darkening fastest wherever your fingers rest. Keeping it bright means polishing it every few weeks. Most owners let it go and end up preferring what it becomes.

The knurling, and why it is there

The grip section is cut with a fine diamond knurl rather than left smooth, and that is not decoration. Bare metal goes slippery the moment a hand warms up, and a knurled section holds a light grip without you having to squeeze for it. It also gives the patina somewhere to gather, so the grip darkens first and the barrel follows, which most people find is exactly the right order.

As a gift, and as a thing you own

It arrives in a fitted presentation box, which matters if it is going to someone who will open it in front of other people. No two develop the same patina, so within a year it really is one of one, and that is a better answer than a brand name for a recipient who already owns good pens. One practical note: copper tarnishes rather than rusting, but the same light protective oil we recommend for carbon steel slows it down considerably on a pen barrel, if you would rather it stayed bright for longer.

Refills and everyday use

The cap is a friction fit, so it pulls straight off and posts on the tail while you write. Treat the finish as something that records use rather than resists it: scuffs and dents will happen, and on copper they blend into the surface within weeks instead of standing out the way they do on a lacquered pen. Keep it off hot radiators and out of direct sun in a car, which is less about damage than about how quickly heat drives the patina.

Three siblings share this design in other metals. The Damascus steel pen and the brass-accented pen are the closest alternatives. Laser engraving can be added before checkout, and every order ships from Memphis with a lifetime warranty.
