Description

A balisong is the one knife where the specification and the feel are almost the same conversation, and that is why it gets its own builder rather than a drop-down on a general order form. This listing carries your configured build through checkout. Configure it first; there is nothing to make otherwise.

Construction is the first decision

Before blade steel, before handle material, before finish, you choose how the handles are built, because that governs almost everything about how the knife moves. Channel construction is milled from solid bar, so the handle is one piece with a slot cut down the middle. It is heavier, stiffer, quieter and more expensive to make. Sandwich construction stacks liners and spacers with screws, which is lighter, endlessly adjustable and easier to repair. Skeletonised handles cut weight out of either approach to speed the swing up. The differences are real and we set them out in channel versus sandwich versus skeletonised.

Then pivots. Washers give a smooth, tunable action that you can adjust as it wears in. Bearings give an immediate, almost frictionless swing that some flippers love and others find too loose to control. Tang shape and the size of the zen pins determine where the handle stops and how sharp that stop feels in the wrist. Our balisong construction explainer goes through the whole assembly piece by piece.

Balance, weight and blade

Tell us what you do with it. A trainer or a knife destined mostly for practice wants to be handle-heavy so the rotation is slow and predictable. A knife you actually cut with wants mass forward. Length matters too: shorter is faster and less forgiving, longer is stable and tiring. We will build to a target weight if you give us one.

Blade options run from D2 for a working edge that lasts, through Damascus for pattern, to lighter stock if you want speed above all else. Every blade is heat treated in our Memphis, Tennessee shop and ground after hardening.

Before you order

Butterfly knives are legal in most of the United States and restricted in a handful of places, and the rules turn on possession and carry rather than ownership. Check where you stand before you commission anything; our state-by-state summary is the starting point, not legal advice. We do not ship into jurisdictions where the knife itself is prohibited.

Expect a genuine lead time. Balisongs take longer than fixed blades because the tolerances are tighter and the tuning at the end is slow work. Once it arrives, keep the pivots clean and dry, put a drop of light oil in them when the action starts to feel gritty, and re-check the screws after your first serious session; new hardware always settles. If you are learning, work over a bed and start with the basic openings rather than anything that involves the edge passing your fingers.
