Description

This is the cart entry for a pocket knife you have already specified on the builder. It holds your configuration through checkout and nothing more. Go to the builder, make your choices, and come back through it rather than adding this to the basket on its own.

An everyday knife is a set of compromises

Every gram you add to a folder is a gram you carry all day, and every millimetre of blade you gain is a millimetre of handle sticking out of your pocket. The knife that gets used is the knife that is present, which almost always means it is smaller than the one people think they want. We would rather build you something you carry seven days a week than something impressive that lives in a drawer. If you are still deciding, how to choose an everyday carry knife works through the honest trade-offs of size, weight and lock type.

What you get to specify

Blade length and shape first. A drop point is the sensible default and handles ninety percent of what a pocket knife is asked to do. A sheepsfoot or wharncliffe gives you a straight edge that excels at cutting against a board or a box and a blunt front end that will not puncture what is inside it. A clip point trades some tip strength for a finer point. Then steel, then lock, then handle scales, then clip position and hand.

Grind matters more than most buyers expect. A hollow grind is thin behind the edge and slices beautifully but has less meat to support hard use. A flat grind splits the difference. A convex is stronger and pushes material aside rather than slicing cleanly. Our pocket knife bevel guide shows what each one feels like in the hand.

How we build it

Folders are fussier than fixed blades. The pivot has to be true, the lock face has to mate cleanly, and the blade has to sit centred in the handle without rubbing. All of that is done by hand at our bench in Memphis, Tennessee, and none of it is rushed. Detents are tuned individually so the knife opens the way you asked for rather than the way it came out of the jig.

Know the rules where you live

Blade length limits, lock restrictions and open carry rules vary enormously between states and sometimes between cities in the same state. Before you specify anything over about three inches, look at pocket knife laws by state and be sure the knife you are commissioning is one you can actually put in your pocket. We build to your specification, but we cannot carry it for you.

Once it is yours, keep the pivot free of lint, flush it out occasionally, and put the smallest possible drop of oil back in. A folder that gets gritty is almost never worn out, just dirty.
