Description

This listing is the checkout route for a hunting knife that does not exist yet. You specify it on the builder, the configuration is priced, and this product is what carries that configuration through the cart so we can start cutting steel. If you have landed here directly, head to the builder first and choose your options there, otherwise there is nothing attached to the order for us to work from.

What you are actually specifying

A hunting knife is a set of decisions rather than a single object, and the builder walks you through the ones that matter. Blade length and profile come first, because a drop point, a clip point, a trailing point and a skinner all behave differently once there is a carcass in front of you. Our breakdown of blade shapes is worth ten minutes before you commit, and if you mostly process rather than field dress, the skinning knife guide will push you toward more belly and less point.

Then steel. Damascus if you want pattern and a genuinely fine edge and you accept that carbon steel needs drying. D2 if you want a semi-stainless tool steel that holds an edge through a long season. 440C if the knife is going to live somewhere humid and you would rather never think about it. Then handle material, which is as much about grip in the wet as it is about looks, and finally sheath style, hand, and whether you want a lanyard hole.

How the build runs

Every one of these is forged, ground, heat treated, fitted and sharpened in our Memphis, Tennessee shop. Nothing is assembled from a parts bin. Once your configuration lands, we confirm the details back to you in writing before any steel gets cut, and if something you have chosen is going to fight itself in use, we will say so rather than build it quietly. Thin stock with a heavy chopping profile, for instance, is a combination we will push back on.

Blades are hardened and drawn in the shop, not sent out, which is the part of the process most small makers skip. The bevel is ground after heat treat so nothing shifts in the quench, then the edge is taken to a stone by hand. Leather work is cut and stitched to the finished blade rather than to a drawing, so the fit is right the first time.

Timing and expectations

A custom hunting knife is not a same-week product. Expect a genuine wait, and expect it to be worth it. You will get progress photographs at the rough-ground stage and again after the handle is shaped, and you can still call small changes at the first of those. Once the handle is pinned and epoxied, the shape is what it is.

If you are new to commissioning work rather than buying off a shelf, our comparison of hand-forged and factory production explains where the money actually goes and why the two are not really competing products at all.
