Cross-section daggers ground with four edges instead of two. The extra facets make the blade rigid along its length, which is the same reasoning behind the old rondel and stiletto designs meant for thrusting through armour. Today these are display and collector pieces, forged in Damascus and stainless with brass or bone fittings and a fitted sheath. Multi-edged blades are restricted in several US states, so check your local rules first.
What four edges actually change
Two edges make a blade symmetrical. Four make it stiff. Grinding the steel into a cross section rather than a flat wedge puts material along the centre line, and that spine of steel is what keeps a long thrusting blade from flexing. The trade is that a four edge blade does not slice. There is no belly to draw across a rope or a hide, so this is a shape built for one motion rather than for general work.
How these are built here
Every one of these is hand forged in our Memphis, Tennessee workshop. Damascus versions are 1095 and 15N20 forge welded and hardened, so the facets carry the pattern down all four sides, which is the reason people buy this shape in the first place. Stainless versions stay bright and take a mirror polish. Fittings are brass or bone, and each one ships with a fitted sheath.
Living with one
Can I sharpen it at home? Yes, but not on a flat stone the way you would a kitchen knife. Each facet needs its own angle, so a small ceramic rod or a fine file is the practical tool.
Will it rust? The Damascus ones will patina if you leave them wet. Wipe the blade and put a light oil on it before it goes back in the sheath.
Is it legal to own? Multi edged blades are restricted in several US states and in some cities inside states that otherwise allow them. Check your own local rules before you order. We ship to you, but the law where you live is the law that applies.
Can it be engraved? Yes, in house before it ships.
