Good for: deer camp, upland birds and general outdoor work. Four inches of blade on an eight and a half inch knife is the classic hunting proportion. Long enough to reach where you need to, short enough that the point stays under control when you are working by feel. Seven ounces gives it enough heft to push through hide without turning it into a chore to wear.

440C in a hunting knife

440C carries a lot of chromium, which is why it resists corrosion so well, plus enough carbon to harden properly. That makes it a sensible pick for a knife that meets blood, water and salt and then sits in a pack until next weekend. It is easier to bring back on a stone than the powder steels and much more forgiving than a carbon blade. What 440C actually is goes into where it sits against the alternatives.

Stag antler and steel bolsters

Antler is naturally ridged, and those ridges are what keep the knife in your hand when everything is slippery. No two pieces are alike, so the grip you get is yours alone in both shape and shade. The steel bolsters at the front do two jobs. They add mass where the handle meets the blade, which settles the balance back toward your palm, and they shield the end grain of the antler from knocks.

Care

Wash the blade with soap and warm water after use and dry it properly. On the steel side that is the entire obligation. This alloy does not want oiling, and it will not spot if you are slow to get to it. The antler is the part with rules. Keep it out of a dishwasher, do not leave it soaking, and do not store it anywhere that swings between hot and cold, because natural material shrinks and can check when it dries unevenly. Park the knife outside the leather sheath between trips.

Questions

Is the antler real? Yes, natural stag, so shape and color vary from one knife to the next.

What do I actually receive? A hand stitched leather sheath, cut to this knife, is included.

Would a patterned blade suit me better? A Damascus bowie skinner is the alternative, and it brings more upkeep with it.

Is this the right shape for skinning? It handles it well. For how the profiles differ, read our skinning knife shapes guide.
